Can you help ID my little tree? was created by jamesjustin33

Hi there! I bought this little guy from a gallery and shop in Kanazawa's geisha district last Fall. This is what it looked like at the shop on 11/25/2015. I was told it is about 10 years old but not much else, including nothing about the species or what fruit it bore. The leaves began to fall off and eventually I had to pull the fruit off because it was rotting but still on the stem, which if you can see has vined in a spiral around the branches. The fruit was red and a smooth oval with no bottom bump like an apple or a pomegranate. Now it's March and the new leaves are coming in great abundance and little wisteria-looking flowers are beginning to open, yet few compared to the number of leaves. The flowers also seem to be a similar colour to the new leaves. I'll follow up with a photo of its current Spring state when I get home, but if anyone can identify it using the photo from last Fall, any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

James

Agreed. The flower images would be a big help.
First guess is persimmon.

Hi guys - thanks for the quick replies. Here she is in all her Spring glory, along with flowers. I'm worried about spreading the pollen between M and F flowers cause they look the same and they're all quite fragile and can fall off easily. Any idea what kind of tree she is? I originally thought the fruit was a small persimmon as well, on account of the leaves where the stem was.

PS - apologies for the sideways photos, a couple of them. They look fine on my phone until I attach them on here!

Definitely persimmon. And a female tree (single flower instead of male clusters - makes sense, it had fruit last year). You would need a male tree to have it fruit again. Not sure on species. There are many cultivars of Diospyros kaki, D. virginiana, and D. rombifolia used for fruit and ornamental. Might be a Princess Persimmon (D. rhombifolia cultivar).

Persimmons are one of my favorite native fruits (I live in Virginia, USA). I have many wild D. virginiana's on my property, & I'm debating a future collecting venture!

@OmarKhairy
That's a ginseng ficus often sold as bonsai, but which are better as a decorative houseplant. Search for them in this forum and you'll find more info. Do some extra research and you may find other species better suited for bonsai and why. Best of luck to you.
