Species and is it good for a bonsai

My mom gave me this and I want to create a upright bonsai with it but I am not sure the species or if it is a good fit I also have this rose of Sharon that I wanted to attempt to use for bonsai .can anyone help me ? I live in the Midwest

looks like a juniper seedling..
fit for bonsai? yes, in about 10-20 years of you plant it in the garden and know how to handle it to make a pre-bonsai out of it..

I second Cronic on the juniper.
Opinion isn't much better on the Rose of Sharon, but the time taken will be shorter. They do grow fast. I'd put in the ground like the juniper, but be aware: they spread like crazy! You'll have them everywhere. My wife and I couldn't get rid of them at our old house.
A benefit of when they sprout all over the place means the trunk will thicken faster. They have pretty flowers, which I've been told are edible. Never tried them though.
Personally, I'd enjoy a good looking shrub and look elsewhere for material. Not the answer you want to hear, but it's my honest opinion.
