Purchased a Japanese Elm early spring 2015, always kept indoors. Leaves appeared a month after purchase and growth was good for approx 4 months then leaves started to turn brown and drop, new leaves appeared and then shortly after they too turned brown and dropped. No leaves have appeared for approx 8 months now and not sure if my tree is dead, water regularly still but no sign of growth. Branches/twigs are still bendy and pliable indicating it is still alive(?) should leaves drop in fall? is yes then this would be premature and leaves started dropping in late July, plus why would there be new growth?
Any suggestions as to what I should do? Picture attached

When I was in my early 20's, I encountered a man who had an extensive collection. Because of his poor attitude towards a young and inquisitive guy, I dropped the idea of entering into this hobby.
20 years later, I find myself becoming encouraged through my research and training. I suspect that in a year or so, I will have trees that are worth getting advice or opinions from this forum. In the mean time, I really enjoy most of the posts.

That would be a great idea - if people would ever read that topic. Which they won't.

Which indicates you were not interested / persistent enough to pursue the hobby,
20 years later, I find myself becoming encouraged through my research and training
but now that you are older and wiser, you are. That's not a bad thing.

Two things that got me interested in bonsai: the pictures my dad sent home from his military tour in Japan, and a mallsai for Christmas when I was 13. Yeah, it died, but I never forgot it. 15 years later, I dove in the deep end and have loved it ever since.
Be encouraging without being so critical - they didn't know any more than I did. Start the conversation. Don't end it.
