Is this bonsai a disaster?

Hi just brought a bonsai today from a local supermarket and started doing some research! I figured out its a Fukien Tea and brought some spare bits like feed, pruning scissors and wiring online.
Only problem is that i have no idea what to do with it and as you may have guessed its not really been cared for being in a supermarket. Is there anyway i can salvage it?

Personally I would consider a trunk chop at the first branch and wire that branch straight up, this would help you gain taper, then decide what size you want to make it, maybe a shohin? Get it in proper bonsai pot with good soil and start it as a very long term project. Start building ramification. This can't all be done in one year, go to a local bonsai club and get some timescales to the work and pointers.
Google as much about the care as possible. At current it isn't what any true bonsai enthusiast would call a bonsai, it's a posh wannabe house plant... You can keep it like that if you want but if that's the case you shouldn't be here!-)

Awesome thanks for the reply! Okay after finding some more stuff out like what ramification is and how many different styles there are i think what you said is a great idea. I think i'd like to take it into the direction of a bunjin style with a little tilt going on as it has a strong root on one side.
So will need to grow it out and get that trunk thick and taper good. I'd like to get it to about 30cm, do you think thats possible? From what i can gather thats going to take up to 5 years but the vision is there now.
Anyway cheers Justin, much appreciated!

You might want to get an azalea pot, an inch or so bigger than the one it's in. Then start working on the bottom branch. Just pinch off the upper branches so the bottom one can grow bigger, that includes it's subbranches.
Next year, you may need a bigger pot, maybe not, but you might want to start working on the roots a bit, nothing major.
When the bottom branch gets really big, start with the next one up, and so on. That way, you'll have even taper, all the way up (hopefully). Then you'll learn what pruning is all about.
It will take more than five years, to be really supper cool.

Yeah i was looking at getting a 20cm pot as its roots are beginning to circle, already its looking happier to be honest with watering. Any advice on feed? I got a standard bonsai fertiliser (NPK 4:4:4) on start feeding every 2 weeks when I receive it.
How will taking the top branches off affect the health of the tree? Would it be too much too soon? I only got it a few days ago and its soil was bone dry. Is there a certain season its better to do this in? While its dormant or during its growing period?

just pinch off some of the new growth at the top, not the whole branch. So the tree will more into the bottom branch, until it gets about a meter long.
Sorry, sometimes I just can't explain well.
At the very top of this page, there's a link called "the basics" , spend a couple of weeks on there, before you do anything.

Guess that was a sort of an advanced technique. Just put it in a better pot, and go study up on bonsai. Personally, little square pots never suited me well, your roots come out with sharp angles. Harder to straighten them out, you'll learn about that as you progress. Have fun.
