UK South Coast Tree Cuttings for Indoor 名媛直播 was created by Chulo

Hello,

I am going to make an attempt to grow my very first batch of bonsai trees. I am planning to cultivate these bonsai trees from cuttings.

My questions are:
  1. What common tree species are available in the UK Hampshire area that can be snipped/cut with the potential to grow into good indoor bonsai trees?
  2. When I go into the forest to get my cuttings, where should I then put these cuttings during the road trip home before potting/planting at home?
  3. Any general tips for my cuttings' chances to successfully grow while out in the garden in the UK South coast area during their first year?

Thanks in advance.

  • None.

  • Each one in a sufficiently large pot, probably, but do look up guidelines for taking cuttings for each specific species and and follow them - on site.

  • Any general tips for my cuttings' chances to successfully grow while out in the garden in the UK South coast area during their first year?

    - 名媛直播 are usually not grown from cuttings in pots. It'll take ages before you get something workable.
    - Do not think in terms of one year. You'll need several years in full ground before the cuttings will be bonsai-able.
    - Trees do not belong indoors
    - Do some research

    None.

I thought this might be the case for indoor bonsai trees. Would this also apply to outdoor bonsai trees too?

What would tree cuttings be grown in? I don't mind waiting a number of years before anything workable comes out. I was actually looking for a long term project!

Indeed. I am planning on getting a young bonsai tree from a nursery while at the same time I was hoping to grow a batch of my own over the years.

    - Trees do not belong indoors

    What about indoor bonsai trees?

    - Do some research

    I am trying.

Thanks for the valuable input Auk.

I have no idea what you're asking.

What would tree cuttings be grown in?

In a pot, until they have rooted and are strong enough to be planted in full soil.

You were asking about local species. Local plants belong in their local environment - outside.
Trees do not naturally grow inside. There are species that will survive indoors - but that was not what you were asking for.

    - Do some research

    I am trying.

Hardly. You are asking about cuttings. That is basic knowledge, not specific for bonsai. You're not doing research, you're asking questions, hoping that others, who have done research, asnwer them for you.

For 'indoor' species, check the guide at this very website.

basicaly, there's no such thing as an "indoor tree".. nature intended all trees to grow outside..

Oh... I see. I think. You meant to ask if there are local tree species suitable to grow bonsai from?
    Yes, there are.

Thanks Auk and Chronic for all your good input.

Doing a search for "native UK bonsai" helped a lot too, so thanks for the tip. And I will carry on looking into the whole subject of bonsai tree care. Going to a bonsai nursery soon and got a book coming in the post too.

    Cheers!

Depending on where you are in Hampshire you have a bonsai nursery in Southampton. Collette had some good starter trees which will be much easier and far more likely to live than cuttings which can be hit and miss and still be a long time growing.

    Hello Geoff,

Thanks and yes, I am planning to visit the bonsai nursery in Southampton when I next get the chance. And yes, I am looking to get a starter tree to begin with while at the same time I will be looking to get a batch of cuttings once Spring arrives and plant them in pots outside in the patio and see how they fair over the coming years. Fingers crossed!
