First of all, as a new reader, I have enjoyed all of the insight and tips as I enter into the realm of bonsai growing. Thank you! I have some questions on an initial project...

Location: I live in the warm climate in the southwestern United States. From the previous advice, it fully makes sense to start with our local plants that can thrive (and to reduce poor growing conditions for others). I have identified some local membership groups and will eventually learn local insights from them. I enjoy working in the yard, growing and training my trees, and even growing plants from the seeds. (The philosophy here is that we have so much sunlight here, nearly anything can grow if you water it properly. Don't take that too seriously, I recognize proper soil and fertilizing, watering, and for some, chill times are required.)

Plant types: In my yard, I currently grow numerous palms, ficus, brazilian pepper, pomegranate (my favorite, sculpted into a tree form), bougainvillea, hibiscus, lemons, limes and even a peach...all of which may be candidates for the future. (If you have any advice or suggestions with these, please let me know.)

The questions: I found a nice bougainvillea, well-shaped, at a local nursery that I can imagine working with in a few years. I plan to replant it now, on a tile into the yard so that it can develop a thicker trunk over the next couple of years while keeping the root depth shallow. What steps should I take with pruning and root trimming? I think it makes sense to trim branches that will not be necessary for the future, but believe I need to leave enough to allow the continued trunk growth. Any advice here?

Thanks for dealing with my novice mind, but with two teenage children growing too quickly, I wanted to follow this bonsai hobby now as I look to enter a new life-long passion.

I have one bougainville, and it lives indoors, in a pot, for half of the year. They do not grow trunks where I live, because is is * dark and cold here (I am in Germany, at the same latitude as manitoba. Just saying.. Read it in this perspective.

All I know is that they do not heal cut wound easily. So if you remove a big branch from the trunk, this has a big risk of never closing, and rot.

Roots.. No idea how they grow..

Thanks Leather. How do u like the one that you have?

Here they grow like weeds. I have four in my yard. Three are trimmed like a hedge, about 5' tall and 4' wide. The fourth I have clipped all low branches and have it looking like a multi-trunk with the leaves filling the top. I haven't had to dig any out, so I'm not sure how extensive the root system. But in our community, I have seen the gardeners chop the plant down to 2' tall stumps. And in the spring they flourish. That's what makes me think they are durable in this climate.

Regarding the planting on top of a tile in the ground, would you trim branches and the roots with other varieties?
