Perhaps this is a dumb post.
I've been watching YouTube videos of people pruning pre-styled bonsais where they talk you through their thought process. In a number of these videos where they are working with trees that have alternating leaves they say 'I am going to prune it here because I want the new growth to go this way' but the shot is too wide to see what was done.
(I think) I understand that the back budding and new growth will happen at the last leaf node before the cut (but it might happen closer to the trunk depending on the species?). If a branch was pruned to just after a leaf that had grown to the right the new growth will occur to the right at that node? This is what seems most logical to me but my knowledge of tree growth habits is limited.
Thanks.

Not really

Googling search terms: directional pruning bonsai alternating leaves
brought me to:
where they say that:
"On alternating leaves, clipping above a leaf on the right side of a branch will cause the new growth to grow to the right"
(and when it points to the left, to the left, when it grows up, up and when it grows down, down).

Thanks Auk.
I looked through the archives here and didn't find anything that blatantly answered my question. I googled some but obviously didn't have the best search terms.
