You see, we are trying to grow little trees that sort of look like big old trees. Those just don't. They have just to big of roots and trunks. It's just so way out proportion.
Sorry again, just wondering, do they really call them bonsai when you boy them. Not to be sarcastic, and we're really not picky, but to be honest

Just because the shape of the trunk doesn't follow traditional bonsai aesthetic doesn't mean that you cannot use bonsai techniques to train a plant to be more pleasing to the eye.
(I'm a succulent guy and I love caudiciforms so I am practically drooling looking at your plant. Do you know what Ficus species it is?)

Bunsen33 wrote: If this were my plant I would do 1 or 2 experimental cuts to see how the plant reacts (and how that will affect ramification down the road). Otherwise I would focus on learning how to make the plant flourish for a year or 2 depending on growth rate and then worry about a major overhaul.
I'd probably do that in reverse.
Other than Samantha, I think this isn't the worst 'Ginseng'. Usually, the roots look very much worse than the ones on this one.

The Ficus? That's a Ficus Microcarpa 'Ginseng'. That's not a Caudiciform is it?

wire the 2 side branches down as arms and take a center branch as head and you have a woman's torso.. you even have 2 cutting wounds as breasts

Sorry if what I wrote was confusing. I meant that it has the look of a caudiciform - a shape I find appealing. I would need to do some research to properly answer whether or not this type of Ficus stores water in its roots or trunk.

I know as per Samantha this might not be the best looking tree but I would love to take that as a challenge and try to make most of it.
