Hello everyone, I'm new here and I'm looking to finally be successful with bonsai.
When I was younger I bought many Chinese elm and always managed to lose them one way or another.

Today at the garden centre I saw a Chinese elm on offer for a fiver so here I am again!-) I also bought another bonsai, both were named as miscellaneous bonsai so need a little help please?

Here is the elm, looks a little worse for wear, re wired the branches to my taste and added some solid fertiliser to both, one cube of westland grow sure between them.

If you want to be successful with bonsai, why do you buy mallsai at a garden center, and why do you buy a plant without knowing what it is :blink:

The second one looks like a serissa, but I'm not sure. A better picture of the trunk may help.

Im 32yrs old and I have no idea obviously so a less patronising attitude might be appreciated as im an obvious newbie to this. I came here hoping to find some interesting, like minded, helpful people and good advise.

I would recommend before buying yet another tree, which probably is going to dy, first look into WHY did your previous trees die? If you do not learn from the previsous plantss you are going to keep some importer very happy; They will keep selling you plants.

Oh.. Do not buy these rip-off sad excuses for bonsai. They are not really suitable plants to work with. I hope you did not spend too much on them. They are not worth the pots they are planted in.

For the next time, could you please post the pictures with the right side up?

I do not know the species you have there.

To keep thee alive.. Check the soil. Make sure it does not stay wet all the time, nor let the pot dry out completely. Outside is a lot better for them, but you cannot move them outside till winter is ggone.

Thanks, I have done lots of reading today, I plan I shelf on my window sill so we can enjoy them inside while they are outside.
I think I've learnt more in the last two hours than I ever knew..previous trees where 10 years ago and I didn't have access to the Internet back then or any clue tbh, over watering I believe was the problem.

I fancy getting a Japanese maple sapling to attempt, maybe a phoenix...

The second tree does look to be a serissa so thanks for that auk.

Btw the pics are right side up on my phone so I'm guessing there's an issue with the upload process on this site? I have over 5000 posts on monsterfishkeepers.com and upload weekly with zero issues? Not sure what I could do other than rotate them 90degree before uploads?

No, anything available at a garden center would easily be id'ed at the garden center.
Don't buy the things they call bonsai there though.

I went to my local garden centre for some bits the other day and looked at their "名媛直播" section out of interest. I felt sorry for the poor thing in the dryest soil I have ever seen in my life. And they priced it at ?39! I was tempted to save it, but I resisted, as I am now a responsible bonsai enthusiast.
