The first one.

名媛直播learner advised to look up 'slip potting'.
First hit is:

where you'll find:

"This means literally slipping the whole tree in to a bigger pot WITHOUT disturbing the roots."

By the way, what's that grey tape for (if it's tape, can't tell) ?

I think it's a nice plant, why not just plant it in the garden, at least around here, it would make a nice little garden tree. I really don't know where you are at.

It, might just save a few years, and a bunch of pots, before it gets to the bonsai stage. Years, even decades are spent making a "bonsai", but there's no reason you can't enjoy your maple, in the meanwhile.

Your right it will save time if I plant it in the ground but I always move and then I would have to keep digging it up. Also I live in Long Beach!!!

It just looks more like a garden thing, than a bonsai to me.

ok...

this is what i would do while it's still winter and still asleep enough..

1: cut it back to the first or 2nd branch and wire that up as new leader to create taper in the future
2: check the roots, prune them, spread them radial to build nebari and healthy rootball.
3: plant it in the garden on a tile or something, if that is not an option, a shallow and big enough training pot.
4: once the leafs come out in spring, fertilise and keep healthy and let it grow freely..

for the next 8-10 years repeat all steps at least every 2 years..

will look a lot closer to bonsai by then..
