Why, if it was in perfect shape?
and now the leaves are all seeming to die, is this normal?
No.
I have it next to my window where it gets a few hours of sunlight + it has a heatlamp
Why, and how hot does it get?

Posted 8 years 11 months ago #19139I bought at walmart. Could it possibly be getting too hot? I put my hand right above the tree under the lamp and cannot feel the heat unless I get a few inches away from the bulb. Like I said the bulb is about 1 and a half feet from the top of the tree.

I see.
I was told by the grower they liked lots of sun and that a lamp combined with natural light would be good for it.
Yeah.. Walmart. What do they know about bonsai...
Could it possibly be getting too hot?
I can't tell... if you don't feel heat, I guess it is not that hot - but have you kept your hand still for a longer period?
Of course it is not necessarily the lamp, I'm just guessing. It could be you damaged the roots when repotting it.
Also... it's from Walmart. They sell - what we like to call - , not really quality bonsai.
I get a few inches away from the bulb. Like I said the bulb is about 1 and a half feet from the top of the tree.
Sorry, I don't live in one of the few countries that uses these measurements. Please use international standards.

Posted 8 years 11 months ago #19144sadly enough, repotting it may:
a: prevent the from exchanging it
b: killed it even further
i don't know where you're from or what weather it is there, but i've never heard of any good bonsai nursery advising to put a tree under a growing lamp..
do you have any other pictures which can show us:
the whole tree
the soil it's in
maybe a picture of the tree before you repotted it and the soil it was in..
what are the moisture conditions of the area you keep the tree
also, some of the leafs look eaten..

Oh... Yep, I got to learn to not try to read so fast.
just the lamp. its from a local bonsai nursery where they take very good care of their plants. 1 and a half feet is equal to about a half meter?
Seems close to me, but I've no idea how much heat that generates, sorry. Still, maybe move it away for the time being to at least twice the distance. It will not damage the plant not having the lamp around for a while.
I may just take it back into the nursery and let them take a look at it.
I think that is the best idea. Plants, that are not properly taken care off, may get symptoms like this, but that should not happen so soon, not a few days after you bought it (unless when you damaged it by repotting).
Have you checked for bugs? Seems something has been gnawing on at least one of the leafs.

THat would be the end of my visits to that place. If thy have their plants half dying each time they repot (Which is effectively every year for some species).. They are doing something wrong. Repotting should never lead to large die-off, if done right.
Where do they keep the trees? In a moist greenhouse environment? It could be just the very fast drying out of leaves, due to a big difference in air moisture content; PLlants grow leaves suited for air moisture levels that they are in. If it is very moist, they have more stoma then when growing in a very dry environment. Swapping them causes juge problems for the tree.
