To collect or not to collect?

Hello all,
I recently found a tree next to my work. I normally would not consider collecting a tree like this but they plan to clear cut the area so the tree would be cut down anyway.
The trunk is about 6" in diameter, the bottom left and right branches are around 2". I have ideas for the tree but I am definitely a novice. I understand that the tree would be about 3' tall and quite large (and heavy). I would love to make a formal upright out of it but I wanted to ask the much more experienced members here before committing. I think it is a maple, common here in Southeast Michigan.
Is this tree worth collecting? I see potential but seeing potential is merely the beginning. There could be huge difficulties with this tree I haven't considered.

Sounds like the tree is doomed anyway, so my opinion is go for it. Take your time, do a bit more research before you get stuck into it.

I agree; you might as well go for it.
Do you know what type of maple it is?

Well, i had the same opinion and i started digging into the soil around the tree to get the root ball ready and such. I also trimmed away the unusable branches. I did not take a photo but will do so tomorrow.
Im keeping my styling options open now but may actually go with an informal upright rather than a formal upright.
I am also unsure now if it is a maple. It seemed to have thorns but I could be mistaken. Pictures for that also tomorrow. I was guessing based on the bark but I havent seen the leaves to know for sure so I could be totally wrong. Thanks for the replies guys!

Yeah, thorns aren't on a typical maple. It also appears to have alternate leaves/branches. Maples have opposite leaves/branches.
Get good pics of the thorns, bark, and the leaf bud (branch tips). If thorn tips are sharp, might be hawthorn. If tips are soft, may be crab apple or viburnum (though viburnum is opposite). Branch structure appears similar to any of those, but also of cherry. I almost said black locust, but structure seems off. Thorns will definitely help ID.
I'm with the others - if its getting removed anyway, go for it. Better to cut your teeth on a throwaway than trying to extract really nice material, especially if you're new to this and needing more experience. Looking forward to more pics.

So I took some photos this morning. The thorns seem to be the smaller twig ends and the larger branches do not appear to have them. The thorn tips are hard brkirkland, and my battered hands can attest to this ha :pinch:
The roots on this thing are spread radially quite nicely, which is alot of work now but may pay off in the long run.
Thanks everyone!

I think you have a buckthorn on your hands, but hopefully not in your hands :pinch:
Check out Rhamnus spp.. Looks a lot like cherry... give it shot!

Awesome! I agree with your assessment. After a quick google search, the photos look very similar to a buckthorn. Looks like the leaves are decently small also so that's cool. Thanks for the ID. Ill post some photos once I get it in a container.
