Struggling with bonsai's

The same thing has happened to both. Slowly the leaves have yellowed/browned and fallen off. I have been careful to water them enough to keep the soil damp (and thoroughly through the root) and used a bonsai feed weekly or so. I have tried different places in my flat - direct light, partial light, shade.
Could this be a virus or fungus? What else could it be? I am reluctant to buy another bonsai until I can be more optimistic about it's chances!

I cannot see what the plant on the photo has been.

So you killed it by overwatering and by continuously giving your plant a different climate.

Yep, could be. Probably root rot, caused by overwatering and keeping the plant at the wrong location.

- Trees normally belong outdoors, not indoors. It is harder to grow them indoors.
- The plant did not come from a real bonsai grower. It is usually called a 'mall sai' and these plants have a very low survival rate
- You don't know how to take care for it, and you started looking for help far too late, when the tree was already dying.
So... seems chances for a next bonsai will be slim. If you want to increase the chances:
- Buy a tree that is suitable for outdoors.

Are there any bonsai's that are suitable for indoors? I have a flat with no outdoor space (and no window ledges that will accommodate plants).

Sorry, I cannot recommend any tree for your environment.

There are no plants that can actually survive in that environment in the long term. Sure, you could try a Jade plant or a Ficus (not Ginseng), but eventually and living under such conditions (no direct sunlight ever, no air circulation, etc.) they would end up dying, just as these two plants previously did.
