The species you have is Chinese Elm, how are you watering it? Where are you keeping it? This species does much better outside not in a house, but it depends in what country you are in as to when you can put it out. Watering ios critical to its; survival as is light.

Looks like you have a ligustrum of some sort there.
The soil looks dry. How are you taking care of it? Has it been sitting in an exposed location getting lots of icy wind? This time of your there should not be a lot of leaves on the plant as it is winter; The plant should have been dormant for a long time.

Thank you so m for replying - I live in the uk and the plant has been in doors I'm watering everytime it's dry but only enough to make the soil wet I've recently tried putting out side during the day time but still it seems very sad and like its dieing- is there any food or anything I can for it?

You mean to say it has been sitting INDOORS?
Then it is absolutely important to find out what you have there. Many species do NOT like being indoors. Especially the heater can cause dried out leaves. Can you check your tree against the species guide, and let us know what you have there?

Also sound as if you may not be watering enough. You need to water thouroughly and then allow to almost dry. Where in the UK are you? if you are putting it outside, there is a huge difference between north and south.
