Hi,
I've had my bonsai for about 6 months a Chinese elm I believe and in the last month or so it has lost all its leaves and started to get a white brittle mold on the trunk, soil and under the pot, I have been wiping it off but am obviously concerned and really nee to bonsai, hopefully someone can help. I think I may have over watered initially but since the mold appeared I have been digging my finger into the soil a couple of cm's and only watering when it seems to be drying once a week/few days. It's also winter in England.

I wouldn't waste time on it. Tree is dead and has started decaying already.

Improper care. Not enough light, overwatering, too hot/cold... don't know, I can't see where it is and what you've done with it.
Your tree is often named a Mallsai on this forum. Not a quality tree, a commercial product that looks like bonsai but doesn't have real bonsai quality. If I have to guess, I'd say that 90 % of such plants die within 3 months. Most bonsai forums are full of posts, identical to yours.
