Odd juniper identification needed was created by brkirkland22

I acquired this bonsai from one of my older bonsai club members who was thinning his collection. The trouble is, neither of us, nor the other bonsai members know what type of juniper it is. Looks like a varietal created from a witches broom, or something - very small & dense. Branches are firm, even in springtime. Soft to touch. Hasn't back-budded very much in my efforts to reduce branch length.
Any thoughts?

FYI, It has had plenty of work done to it over the past year and plenty more to do. Excited to see what this material does in the coming years!

Have you looked for other species then juniperus, if the needles are soft maybe it's a Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard'
But i'm not a expert in identifying. Try google with Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard' bonsai.

cheers

I'm pretty sure it is not a chamaecyparis but a juniper. Don't know which one.

I checked out the chamaecyparis - close! But the needle/scale shape is different, especially at the tips. The color was right.
I looked at a few different cypress, false cypress, & other junipers but no luck. The leggier limbs from the interior were definitely indicative of a juniper.
What's really odd is the growing buds - I couldn't find them! Juniperus chinesis, procumbens, virginiana & others have that beautiful bud that stands out at the tips. All through the growing season, this tree filled in where I had thinned it, but no buds were clearly seen. The detail shot I attached was late March - there should have been plenty of them. Maybe I'll get some better pictures this coming spring when it's out of the winter bed.

I picked up some trees that an older club member donated today, and lo & behold, a Boulevard blue! I took some photos for foliage comparisons.
One is with the Boulevard cypress, the other with a Procumbens.
This mystery tree's foliage is micro!
