Howdy, folks!
New to bonsai training and trees. I have 3 bonsai: Ponytail Palm, Money Tree, and a Juniper.
I have a beautiful Japanese red maple in my yard that I would like to start a bonsai from. Everything I've read, I can cut a small branch from a section I like in early summer and try to germinate a root system this way. Is this true?
What tips or advice can some of you guys offer for me?
Thanks!

I find japanese maples to be tricky with cuttings; I have not yet managed to get them to reliably root.
Airlayering is a much more reliable way to root them.

Great! Thanks for the information, I'll see what I can find about airlayering.

I have a question about Japanese maples I just received one and it's in a real small pot and I was wondering if I can put it in a bigger pot at this time or will it weaken the tree.

Firstly, why didn't you start your own post?
Secondly, look up 'slip potting'

carefull with red leaf maples
they have a weaker root system and are almost always grafted on a stronger acer palmatum cultivar base
same goes for the disectum cultivars
(a bit like with fruit trees you can buy in almost any garden center)
if you do intend to airlayer a part of your tree, leave the airlayer on long enough
on the how and when for airlayering, just google or look on reliable websites / youtube channels
for info: i have 2 acer p. deshoyo
one is a bigger tree and is a grafted one
the other is an ungrafted one, much smaller, and cost me the same..
almost all bonsai nurceries all over the world will have starter material for acer species at reasonable prises.. so it's always nice to have a look before you take off a branch of what otherwise might be a stunning tree in your garden..
