PLEASE HELP!

i suspect that my Sweet Plum is suffering due to a repotting mistake made at the purchase.......

can anyone tell me how much of the roots is to be exposed when potting this type of plant?!?

imfind so many different answers everywhere with no baseline. i have also noticed that the tree does not seem to be "holding on"'to the soil very well. it's "loose" for lack of a better term.

any advice is much appreciated!

pics attached.

Do you grow this on the planet from the Avatar? :D If not, post a photo of the tree in normal light. :)

Uhmmm, hard to provide a straight answer regarding this tree status from that photo... However, basic notions about roots...

Roots fulfill two main functions on a tree... That is support and nutrition...

How many times have you seen a tree with big fat roots sprouting from a tree?s trunk base radiating from its center and describing (generally) a circular pattern around it? Well, those big fat roots are the ones entitled with the job of "supporting" the tree. Those roots you can leave them exposed as no harm will come to the tree. As an example, see this button:

Now, there are those thin little roots that remain unseen (they reside underground) which main purpose is to keep the water, nutrients and minerals flow running trough a constant uptake. Those fine roots you should keep him well covered, since the inability to comply with this rule will provoke the drying of these roots and their consequent death.

As for the "looseness" of the tree... That ain?t no good either. If the tree is unstable within its pot it might lead to the existence of small pockets of air within the substrate, that will also lead to roots drying out and then dying. Also, it won?t provide the tree with a strong and steady support, which is not desirable at all.

Also, by your photo, I believe your keeping this tree indoors, when it should positively be outdoors.

Finally, and also by your photo, I believe that this tree?s fate it?s been sealed long ago. I believe is already dead or in a very advanced process of it. Sorry for that...

Hope I might have been of some help...

I have to say, it looks like your tree is submerged on water, I hope it isn't 24/7.

my apologies for the photo, i was in a bit of duress. here is a normal, everyday photo. i do use a UV LED at a suggested wattage, distance, and time period. i do not keep it submerged in water 24/7. this was a wattering, the water is two inches above the soil level, and only takes place long enough to wet the soil entirely. i use a 20-20-20 and a product called superthrive. i do the best i can with the FULL SPECTRUM of instruction and advice taken (and some not, though appreciated) from many sources...but, mainly from the gentleman i bought them from who has maintained and operated a successful company in Dallas for 30+ years...i am only seeking the wisdom available in a community where there are many opinions. i feel like this is the place!

please understand. i may be asking for help, but i am not uninformed or lackadaisical in my care and consideration for the needs of these living creatures, that i love, btw.

thank you to everyone who posted a response. particularly Alain.

i hope with the correct photo i can get a slightly better median of information...

I think Alain's comment was complete and correct. The new photo doesn't change that.
