I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've been not watering until the leaves turn flat and wrinkly, and the branches themselves get kind of droopy and quite wrinkly as well. All of the leaves have fallen off. I removed some soil from the base to look for root rot, and I didn't see any signs of it - no black or decaying roots. I tightened down the plant, as it has been somewhat loose in the soil, and returned the soil, and made sure to let all the soil settle by tapping it with a small stick. I let it sit for another two days before watering it, because I have learned that this plant will shoot out roots when dry, looking for water. There is still no sign of growth. I also moved it about 3 feet away from the window, an area which is still quite sunny, but not quite as direct in hopes that IF there is any new growth, it won't be scorched right away as it was before. Do you think that could have been the problem? I have no idea what else I can do. I'm playing the waiting game right now. I had to water it becuse it was looking like even more branches were about to die, how wrinkly and dry they were. I watered it by pouring water over the top for about 30 seconds, and held it while it finished dripping for another couple minutes before returning it to its new location.

Not much. You're just being impatient.
I've been not watering until the leaves turn flat and wrinkly, and the branches themselves get kind of droopy and quite wrinkly as well.
That's not what you were told to do. If the branches get droopy and wrinkly, you're late with watering. When the leaves get wrinkly, it's a sign it is time to water. Agreed that's now going to be a bit tricky, as:
All of the leaves have fallen off.
I also moved it about 3 feet away from the window, an area which is still quite sunny, but not quite as direct in hopes that IF there is any new growth, it won't be scorched right away as it was before.
That shouldn't happen... this tree should easily tolerate it, so
Do you think that could have been the problem
I don't think so.
I have no idea what else I can do
Understand that this tree has a long way to go to recovery - and that it may not recover at all. Be patient, there's not much else you can do.
