Doesn't sound like a good idea to me - you'll be changing the climate for the plants twice a day. They may not like that.
Look up your plants and the care guidelines, here you can find what hardiness zones the Loropetalum does well in:
I'm sure you can look up the guidelines for your elm yourself.

Mixed thoughts. Seems like a very commercial webshop, but they do seem to have some nice trees. Prices seem mixed too, some seem all right (if what you see is what you get), but some look overpriced. Hard to tell from the photos.
Their advise:
"During winter place your bonsai in the brightest place possible, trying to avoid hot objects like radiators and televisions. Good daylight is essential to the trees health"
That doesn't tell us much about where we should place the tree.
Also note what the reply was to someone who wrote her tree isn't doing well (bottom of the page):
"Although the loropetalum is a hardy bonsai they do not like the cold (unless out of leaf outside)"
They are hardy but don't like cold unless...
If it's hardy, I'd keep it outside, but to be honest, I'm not familiar with this tree species so I had to look it up:
"Temperature: USDA Zones 7A-10A. Terrifically heat
tolerant. Growers estimate that the plant is hardy
to about 10 degrees and perhaps as cold as 5°F (-
15°C). The white-flowering varieties seem to be a
bit less cold hardy. Great care should be taken for
the winter months. Loropetalum will do well indoors
for the winter if given plenty of light. It does
not need a dormancy period. Don’t winter outdoors
as a bonsai, as the roots will not like to be
frozen"
That's surprising...
"Frequently sold as an indoor bonsai, we would suggest that it is kept outdoors"
Confusing... seems you'll get problems with light when you keep it indoors, and possible problems if the temperature drops too much when you keep it outdoors.
I guess you'd actualy need a cold greenhouse for this plant.

And oh my... that's yet another young plant that's not a bonsai, or even ready to become a bonsai.

Posted 9 years 2 months ago #17633One question I do have is that I noticed some mold on the rocks that are on top of the soil. I removed those rocks. I also notice the soil is really really wet. I won't be watering for a while. The next thing I have noticed is that there is a root coming back up from the soil. I don't want to report unless absolutely necessary (I have been on the lookout for a small pot) Can I trim it? I'm not real sure of what to do.

Good.
I also notice the soil is really really wet.
That may be the cause for the mold.

If it's completely out of the soil (including the tip) then it's not in the soil and not taking up water/nutrients, so it should be OK to remove it. Use proper tools.

So, As I was wiping/removing the rest of the rocks from the top of the soil, it just feel out, seems it was just a small stick, wasn't attached to anything. Weird..
