What did the vendor tell you what plant this is when you bought it?
From this photo I'd say this is not a bonsai, but please add better photos, from different angles, including a close up of the leaves.

Hi
Ermm im not to experianced in identifying tree species but it looks like a Fukien tea (Carmona retusa).
Dose it have little buds on it that look like they could possibly flower? Maybe a close up picture of the tree would allow me to know for sure.
Most people wont class your tree as a bonsai tree on this website. 名媛直播 is an artform and your tree needs alot of work, time and growth before it can become a bonsai.
The pot you have currently got it in looks very small for the size of the tree, I doubt it will gain many nutrients from the soil going forward. I would suggest repotting it in better soil and putting it in a bigger pot.
Note: It is advised that you read up on when to repot your tree, its usually advised you do it in the summer but you might have to do it asap if it stuggles. Usually people who sell these trees pot the with very cheap bad quality soil.

Uhm.. Not on this, and not on any other website. As you said, bonsai is more than a cutting in a pot.
as for the species, I would say it is a species of Ligustrum (A privet).
The soil.. Hard to tell. It looks like coconut fibres. In itself not bad for a plant to grow in. I would not repot unless there is a clear indication that the plant needs it now.

Thanks. I can't differentiate between a privet and a fukien tea. Any advise on how to grow them? Like what soil do I need and watering patterns?

On closer inspection I think leatherback was right in identifying your tree as a a species of Ligustrum (A privet).
I have a Fukien tea tree around that size and there are too many differences for it to be a tea tree.
As leatherback said you dont need to repot unless you feel its needed.
Look up your tree's species and guide on how to care for it, every different tree needs different care. Personally I water my tree when the soil changes from being damp/moist to dryish/normal.
As for soil there are constant debates on which is best for what plant.
Maybe look up other people who have the same tree species as you and find out what they use.
The information is out there
Good Luck!
