When to give up?

so I rescued a bonsai from the dumpster. I repotted in good soil mixture and have been watering according to the great advice from this website. When I repotted I saw that some of the roots were brown dry and appeared dead but there were a couple of large healthy looking (to my untrained eye) roots. It has been a week and all of the leaves have fallen off and some of the smaller branches are brown and brittle.
My question is how long do I water and give the bonsai a chance? Will I see new growth or leaves that will indicate it is going to make it...and how would I know if it is truly dead? Will all the branches grow brittle?
Thank you in advance for your advice. I so want this little guy to make it.

Which species of tree? You can see it on the tree if it is still alive; Adding a picture could help

here are a couple pictures, they stink but are the best I can do with my crappy phone. there were a few tiny branches on top but the turned brittle. thank you for your time, not sure if you can figure anything out from the pictures but I appreciate your effort.

keep it some where warm but not in a window with direct sunlight as you will cook the poor thing.
You can put some chop sticks in the soil and place a clear bag around it to keep the humidity high. Make sure its sealed tight and open it every other day for 10-20 mins for some fresh air.
Keep putting pics up so we can see your progress pal???

I wouldn't waste time on it. Even if it recovers, it is no good bonsai material.

Hi Ian,
Auk's opinion was exactly why I did not respond. So I will expand on it.
The tree lachks good taper, actually, has a section of reverse taper. There is no developed branch structure. Not suface-root-spread to speak of. All those elements make it a young plant in a pot, rather then good bonsai potential.
Sorry
