Do I need to do anything? First tree!

I got a kit from my girlfriend, one of those that contains packets of seeds and the degradable containers to start out with.
The attached image shows what I have at the moment, pretty pleased that one of the seeds appears to be growing! It must be around 4 months or so old now. I have no idea what kind it is though? The seed (case?) stuck to one of the branches dropped off yesterday. I'm concerned as the main body of the sapling has turned a brown colour but Im not sure if the image will make that clear. I've heard that I shouldn't water it too much and not to repot it any time soon and I haven't added anything to the soil such as fertiliser or plant feed, should I?
Apologies for all the questions and my total lack of knowledge, really keen to keep it going though!!
Thanks!

Posted 9 years 6 months ago #16375That the stem is turning brown is a good sign. It means that it is moving from the youngest seedling stage, and is becoming 'woody'.
I would give tiny amounts of fertiliser (Just the normal houseplant mixture will do), I think just once for now, and let it grow.
Eventually it will need to be transplanted into different substrate. As that is a triccky thing, I think waiting tuill next year would be best.
Are you planning on keeping it in a pot, or will you grow it out in the ground first?

Brilliant, thanks Leatherback! Made my day!
I'll get my hands on some fertiliser today and use a very little amount. I've been doing some research on repotting as I wondered if it had maybe outgrown the pot its in but realised that's not an issue at the moment. I was thinking of leaving it in a pot indoors, hadn't really considered putting it outside, mainly because the weather here is so temperamental and changes in the blink of an eye.
Thanks again, I will let it keep going for now and post again in a while with an update!

Posted 9 years 6 months ago #16383No question about it, unless you are in extreme climate zones (e.g. 35+C summers or -30C winters)

How would I go about this? Is it as simple as leaving it in the current pot and placing it outside or do I need to take it out and actually plant it in the ground? It looks pretty fragile at the moment so not sure how easy it would be to remove and plant elsewhere...
