Hi Guys, I am a newbie I live in Australia's New South Wales Southern Highlands, we have frost down to minus 5 or 6. My first question is, can I grown bonsai in this climate? I have a shade house for my more delicate plants, because the shade house is outside it is still open to all weather, would this make a difference, or would I need to build a totally enclosed greenhouse? Second question, can I grow any living plant in bonsai? e.g. hydrangers. Thanks guys, Eddie

No problem. I get up to -20 and only provide protection to the more delicate species. But pines, junipers, maples etc can handle a few degrees of frost without any trouble.
Any woody species can be used for bonsai. However, preference is given to species with small leaves and/or species where leave size can be reduced with bonsai techniques, to increase the effect.
