I want to start a bonsai but I don't know where to start. I just dont know what tree to choose and whick one would be suitable for bonsai ing.

Elms are very forgiving, and junipers can be shaped year round. Just wait two weeks between working on junipers. Easy plants for beginners like us!

I Have To agree Elms are very forgiving you have to try very hard to kill one this would be my pick also.

there are a lot of great beginner bonsai books available as well.

Most chinese elms out there are horrible s-shaped mall sai
If such a tree has been bought,I second the Oh God.
Just because it is easily abvailable, doesn't mean it is a good choice.

But well.. Better to start with something not-so-great than to not start at all.

- New bonsai enthusiast wants to grow a bonsai

S shaped Elm is nothing special bt you can learn on it and experiment as I did.
After 4 months its still alive and thriving, although after repotting it on a stone I had a few days when few leaves went yellow, but now it?s fine.
Just repot it right after you recieve it no matter what, and put it in a modern substrate.
Mine had a hole right under the trunk where water had no way to get to and dry roots around.
And read articles on forums and blogs where you can learn a lot of useful information.
