Time of year to purchase

Hi, I was curious as to whether there was a time frame that was best suited to buying a tree online. I am going to be buying a Chinese elm and it will be my first tree so I want to get it right. I have looked on the internet and can't find anything specific, so I'm starting to think that I'm worrying about something that doesn't even matter. Thank you

Ideally you do not buy online. The value of a tree is determined by so many factors, that I would like to see the tree beforehand, unless you know the dealer quite well (e.g., from Kaizen bonsai I do buy online, because I know they deliver what they promise, without visual tricks).
THat being said..
In summer you know the plant is alive and healthy upon arrival. In winter you have to wait till spring. In winter the plant does not dry out as easily as in summer..
Key: Buy from a reputable source, and they will advice you if they cannot ship at that time.

Ok, thanks. Yeah ideally I would rather go and see the tree before I buy it but the closest bonsai garden to me is over three hours away...

That's not far, I have done several trips that were 4 to 5 hours. Much better to choose your own tree than someone else.
