Beginning bonsai suggestions? was created by spontaneousmusicalnumber

Hi, I'm completely new to bonsai but it seems really interesting so I want to give it a go. Before I jump in I've got a ton of questions so here I go:
1. I don't want to drop a boatload of money right off the bat. In obtaining supplies, would it be best (read: most cost efficient) to order online, or to see if garden centers near me carry bonsai supplies? (Living in Iowa the nearest bonsai store is over 2 hours drive. I might have the time later in the summer to make a day trip out but likely not for quite a while)
1a. If I do order online, would it be best to get a complete starter kit, or to buy needed components individually? I'm looking at 名媛直播Boy of New York, they look like they have good selection.
2. I know I should probably start with an easy species like juniper or chinese elm to get my feet wet, but I'm really smitten with fruiting/edible bonsai like blueberry, and rosemary. Should I buy a young plant of a more difficult sort and as I wait for it to grow, get acquainted with easier species? ARE fruiting/edible species more difficult?
3. Also, I mentioned I live in Iowa. The summers get HOT, and the winters get COLD. I'm in college so I don't have any outdoor space in the fall/winter (but am lucky to have a nice big dorm room). Would an indoor species be the best, or should I get a tropical one as it will get PLENTY of summer sun?

Any help and species suggestions will be greatly appreciated, and I'm looking forward to getting started!

Well, some of this has become moot in the last day. I'm actually on vacation in California to visit my grandparents, and my mom told me she knew of a bonsai place about five minutes away. The lady there was very helpful and suggested this Chinese elm, she said I could keep it outdoors in the summer and indoors near my south-facing window (but not too close) in the winter. I picked this one because I really liked the trunk shape and the gnarled bark beginning on the bottom. It'll be about another week before I can get working on it, in that time I'll order the stuff the nursery didn't have, like wires and mesh for the drainage holes. Would I be able to find good soil at any garden supply store or should I order it?
