Advice on Baobabs, please! New cutting *May1 was created by YSYWT
Posted 9 years 8 months ago #15647I've always been a fan of bonsai and I've decided to go through trial and error until I have a living, and healthy tree. However, although I still search and investigate I wondered, it would be better to have a log and be advised than to make mistakes that I will regret.
I got a cutting from a Baobab, two actually, one died but the other one sprouted some 1 to 2 mm roots.
I put the cutting in water and changed it everyday, I also had a plant fertiliser and I used a tiny syringe to drop 1ml into the water medium.
I read that I need a 1 cm ball of root to plant a cutting, so I was planning to wait and see because it's still soon. I made 3 other cuttings of 2 different trees that also grow around but I didn't read in time that flowers should be removed in order to avoid energy drain, so it probably died, although I cut it after I saw it weakened.
One of them is a Baobab (Imbondeiro as they say here)
The other is a Ficus, I was told. And the third one should be an Acacia, thats the only name I know for her.
Am I doing this wrong? Help me please!

Posted 9 years 8 months ago #15741You shouldn't take the newly developing cutting out of water like you have . When those tiny white
lumps are beginning to form they are the start of the "callousing" around the wound before new roots begin to form.
By removing from water/soil and exposing to "air" it does them No good at all, especially if the species
has trouble forming roots in first place.
Cut off the leaf leaving 3 mm stub before other stem and see how it all goes. the leaf was always going to fall off
so that's no concern really. Keep at it!

Posted 9 years 7 months ago #15748Thank you!!
I don't know if I understood well, but I cut the leaves that were dying and left one, the healthiest!
I cut them both 3 mm from the intersection where they join, might have cut 2mm on one side though, the following image may give an idea, although small as it is!
Kind regards

Posted 9 years 7 months ago #15749Alot of ficus and other trees which has same shape leaves , they cut healthy leaves in half also so the cutting does not lose to much
moisture from transpiration. Not sure if you should , just play it by ear and see how you go,
be patient

Posted 9 years 7 months ago #15781I cut the baobab's last leaf in half as I noticed it was yellowing as well. The green is leaving the plant although I see new "callousing" but still nothing big coming out. I left the plant in a shadow area outside.
The other plants are not responding, no callousing or anything I can see.
I change the water everyday as to avoid bacteria accumulation (I read about it somewhere).
I also add with a tiny insulin syringe, about 1 ml of Liquid Organic plant food (8-2-6(16)) when I change the water. I figured they need nutrients as well and 1 ml is so little it wouldn't impact negatively, would it?
Other things I have got that I'm experimenting with:
- I got some clementine seeds from a fruit I ate (didn't get saliva on them though) kept them moist and in warm water over night, now they are in a bag, with soaked absorbing paper as well as some other kind of "pepper" seed, but they haven't responded yet (2-3 days passed).
- I got some cannabis seeds because I like the plant and I'd like to transform into a bonsai (I saw some examples online) but they still didn't sprout, maybe I'm doing it wrong (probably).
- I got some mint plants that my mother left rotting in the kitchen, cleaned them up and placed them in water, with the root zone covered so it doesn't get much light - they are the most responsive plants I have, showing growth everyday, it's impressive!
My resources are very limited as I live in Angola in a city that was once considered to be the most expensive in the world, so I try with what I have at hand, baobabs are everywhere, "acacias" and some ficus-look-a-like-or-ficus-it-self in my compound.
What can I try growing? I'd like to try working with hydroponics (I think that's how it's spelled) but I heard I need an air pump to keep the oxygen, and some other things.
Oh well... I'll keep this updated!
Kind regards

I can't help but wonder: do you want to grow bonsai, or just plants?

Posted 9 years 7 months ago #15784名媛直播 is the main focus, the rest are just fun!
I was hoping I would find a lot of plant enthusiasts here that could share their knowledge and share my journey with them, is this attitude not welcome here?
Kind regards,
