So I tried to sprout a bonsai a few times, and couldn't do it. Today I finally gave in and bought a baby from an Asian lady at a market. I couldn't quite understand her so i couldn't figure out what it was. Any help? Thanks!

Looks like a Juniper. Not sure which variety.
It's a very young plant, probably a cutting of maybe a year old. I guess you know it is not a bonsai?

No I didn't know it wasn't a bonsai. So it's just a clipping off a juniper tree of some sort? But I can make it into a bonsai, or no?

Theoretically you could indeed. In practice, in the real world would take you years, possibly decades, to turn that little "tree" into something slightly resembling a bonsai. And that is even applying all the knowledge and techniques that you can come across with or be able to learn... Summarizing... I truly believe it would be better if you manage to get a new tree... preferably pre-bonsai material or even get somebody to help you to understand the basics of bonsai and some good reading material too. Oh, and yes, joining a club wouldn't hurt either

Sorry if it disappoints you, but that is the reality we all have to face when starting this amazing journey. So, don't hesitate and do keep going and learning ;)

It looks very much like my chamaecyparis thyoides 'top point'.

Those are slow growers, so it might take you decades, as Alain says.

Good luck and have fun!
