Jade Mealybugs and Trunk Chop

I have a large jade plant about 3ft tall with multiple trunks. It has a case of the mealybugs which I've tried to get rid of in a variety of ways (spray, alcohol, hosing off). None of these strategies have worked, however. I've also been thinking of repotting it into a nicer pot. So I'm wondering if anyone has had good luck ridding their trees of mealybugs with a drastic trunk chop/defoliation? I was thinking that this is as good a time as any to combine a trunk chop with a repotting...also hoping to get rid of the mealybugs. Any thoughts would be great

i would think chopping any trunk would just weaken the plant IMO. alcohol is quite risky as an insecticide so best not to use it in the future. if i were to do anything a systematic insecticide would be suffice for me but you have said you have already used that. so maybe try it again and see what happens, but make sure that the last time you sprayed was more than a fortnight or something. i may be wrong but i am sure of the trunk chop weakening the plant.

I use methylated spirit on a cotton bud the get rid. Cutting the plant down will not rid it iof the problem, you have to eliminate the mealy bug. The Crassulas are very succeptible to them. If it is bad you will lose the plant, so you need to treat it soon. Insecticide will probably not get them, they have a coating over them which protects. Meths will do it, but you will need to keep doing it as there will be eggs and they will continue to hatch.

Just wanted to give an update. I did the trunk chop and root prune and the tree bounced back perfectly! No more mealy bugs either. I thought others who encounter this problem might want to know this strategy. The leaves are all budding back in on the calloused cuts
