Yeah, but you walk into the class not knowing painting and sketching freehand exists at all.

Auk, you have lost me with your train of thought.

None of us are born with a knowledge of cooking, painting or creating bonsai from raw plant materials, we learn these things from others that share.

IMHO the first step in seeing this ancient art continue to grow and develop is having people with new ideas and concepts become involved. Yes you need to have benchmarks to maintain standards, but (there is always a but) be prepared to see these benchmarks change from time to time.

Well enough idle chit chat, people will do what they want, regardless of our opinions.

I am off to have a cleansing ale whilst trying not to kill off a new stick in a pot.

Cheers

First lesson learned: a juniper cutting in a pot is not a bonsai, it's a scam by someone who wants to make money by selling something in which he has invested practically nothing.

IMHO the first step in seeing this ancient art continue to grow and develop is having people with new ideas and concepts become involved.

You've lost me now. How is a cutting in a pot a new idea or concept?

Yes you need to have benchmarks to maintain standards, but (there is always a but) be prepared to see these benchmarks change from time to time.

Nothing wrong with change, but sorry, what you write makes no sense if you are still talking about this this poor little plant.

people will do what they want, regardless of our opinions.

Fine with me. Just don't call it bonsai.

Thank you so much to the people who didn't think giving advice was useless. It makes me sad that I've been fooled. Next time I will make a more thoughtful and informed decision. I started off on the wrong foot, but one must learn from their mistakes, right? I hope this post is a good reference for more newbies to come.

I don't know what would have happened if I did call it a bonsai ;)

It happens, and it happens a lot and it makes me angry (not with you, but with the seller).

Next time I will make a more thoughtful and informed decision. I started off on the wrong foot, but one must learn from their mistakes, right?

We, including this grumpy, rude dutch guy, are more than willing to help you make that informed decision.

I like your writing style. Every time I read something you write, I see a happy little kangaroo jump along the bottom of my screen.

Unfortunately, I did not really understand the above expression.

Let's just kep it that way. It is not always a compliment.
Judgetribe: Don't just judge auk by these statements. PLease do note the threads where he is enthusiastic re. the plant.

It just gets very tiresome to see the endless strream of cuttings passed as bonsai on the forum. You may have noticed I have just started to ignore them :S
