Hi all:

First of all, thank you for reading this, and for helping if you can. I just moved to a new apartment and as I love plants in general, some friends gave me a bonsai tree as a housewarming present. I've been carefuly reading about how to take care of it and so far it looks good, but I would love to identify it in order to know more about the specific care needed for my tree.

I went through the ID guide, but I don't know how to tell if my tree is evergreen or deciduous. My guess is evergreen, as here in Spain is winter and the little buddy is still wearing its green leaves

My first pick would be this one:



But it states that the leaves are shiny and mines are not.

Also watching the form of the leaves it is very similar to this ones:



So I don't know exactly which tree I have. I've attached two pictures, one general and one leave close-up from both sides.

I'd say you have a ligustrum there, and the little one is unhappy (Dried out at some point)

Thank you very much. I always keep an eye to check that the soil has some moisture, but I will take extra care about it. I want my little tree to be as happy as I am!

Best is to check every day with a chopstick to see if it drying out, if the stick comes out clean then it needs water. Depending how warm your house is will dictate how often you need to water. It needs as much light as possible and away from a direct heat source,

Hi Nahumet,

Glad to see that someone else in this forum is living in Spain. I?m in Ciudad Real, a bit far from Madrid, but still in Spain Well, even if you?ve been doing some reading I would strongly recommend joining a club or a bonsai association, that is if you are planning to get serious with bonsai, of course. And since you are living in Madrid you would be able to find good and respectable clubs in here:

Well, I'm just a newbie in this world, but I have been reading a lot through forums and websites and I really enjoy this world, so I will go through the website you suggested and find some bonsai club. If they are as nice as you guys, is definitely worth a visit!

Thank you @m5eaygeoff for your chopstick trick, I did know this to check the moisture when baking a cake, but didn't think applying it to my little bonsai friend.
