Bought a 3yr old tree. Now what? was created by Druwalter8

Hi all,

I just bought a three year old tree. I need help identifying what type it is and how to care for it.

The branches are turning brownish and I don't know the last time it was repotted.

I tried to get some good pictures of the whole tree, the brown leaves and a close out for identification.

Is this an "indoor" tree?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

This is a juniperus, most likely a communis. Juniper are stictly "outside at all times" plants.

note: Indoor bonsai is a nice term. But all plants should be kept outside, unless the weather is too cold/wet.

When you say branches are turning brown.. Do you mean the whole branch? Or just the oldest needles?

Thanks for the great info leatherback! The needles that are closest to the base of the branch are turning brown. Do these just need pruned off? Or is this a sign of something larger?

Junipers will (just like pines) drop older needles. It is a normal maturing of the branch. Note that -unline most deciduous trees- Juniper do not grow new green once no more green is left on the branch: If you trim back, alway make sure you leave green on the end, or the branch will die off

Yes, junipers drop old needles, but I'm not so sure. If it is 'just bought', and the brown needles were not there when it was bought, then this seems a bit soon and it can be a sign of stress - maybe because the tree is kept indoors.

I bought the juniper from a street vendor, about three weeks ago, who grew the trees from seedlings. I didnt think to ask about the type of tree or how to care for it.

Like I said, I am in the beginning stage of bonsai. I had no clue there was so many different species of bonsai. Plus I figured you just water it and keep it on your coffee table.

That being said, I think my tree just needs a little TLC. So you guys are saying I need to move it outside and water it frequently? What about repotting or fertiling it?

名媛直播 are bonsai because of techniques, not because of species. So every tree species in theory could be formed as a bonsai.

Juniper should be oustside. Always. So yes. Move it outside asap.

Juniper is drought-preferring.. You should not let it get bone dry, but it certainly hates soggy soil. So keep drier then you normally would allow plants to be

No, i would say it is the fact they are old needles and that juniperus communis is a shrub it grow to a smaller height therefore ditching needles near the main trunk, but chances are probably 5050 as it IS indoors and it IS a juniperus comunis.
