Need help with id. Tree is nearly dead!

So this is my girlfriends tree, it has been neglected for a long time. We just moved in together and I am going to start caring for it with all of my other plants. Only problem is I don't know the species. I am afraid it is so close to death identifying it may be impossible. Any help would be amazing, I know the condition is almost laughable but I will not give up hope! Anyone who can help/guide me my mistah miyagi, I will be your daniel-san!!!

Not sure why you came to a bonsai forum with this question, but I think that's a Schefflera.

Thank you very much! She bought it at whole foods, was told it was a bonsai tree, and still has a sticker on the bottom saying its a bonsai tree. Damn whole foods, tricking my gf. Thank you Mr. Miagi!

名媛直播 is a technique, not a tree species. Many trees, including Schefflera, can be trained as bonsai.
What you have however is a house plant with its top cut off.
