Chinese Elm - Lost a quite a lot of leaves. was created by spuker1

Hi,
I'm a bit worried about my Chinese Elm. It was growing really strong throughout all the summer and is by far the most vigorous and healthy tree I own. I've made a deal with my neighbour who owns a garden to keep an eye on couple of my trees for me and I'll pop in every couple of days to check on them.
She's a keen agricultural amateur and her boyfriend works as a gardener so they know what they're doing so there's definitely no blame what so ever.
This is how it looked two weeks ago:

And this is how it looked today (after trimming down some of the new, long, stick-like growth):

So the leaves aren't really drying out or changing colour they just come off easily I think and it was quite windy for past couple of days so I think a lot of the foliage that has been lost have been blown off. Also it's probably too early for it to drop the leaves for it's dormancy (plus they would go yellow and red before they'd drop anyway)
Any clues what's going on? I'm really worried about this tree as it's my favourite one (yes, I know it's ugly lol)
Thanks,
Tom

i might not know the answer, but just think why you would like lose leaves, probably there is not enough nutrients to build strong, healthy tissue?

Thanks,
I feed it 5ml of Chrystal 名媛直播 Feed (4-6-6) every week or every other week now plus it has got fresh soil as it has been repotted this spring so I wouldn't say it's not having enough nutrients... Unless what I do is not enough or something else stops it from getting nutrients.
I'm trying to check for all the possible reasons why it would do it so I can treat it as soon as I can if there is something wrong with it.
Only thing that comes to my mind now is over watering because it rained heavily recently, although it wasn't watered much because of that. I know this tree and it was really clogged up and it was really dry and it always was happy so I don't think it would go upset because of rain... or would it?

It helps to know what country you are in. I can't see much wrong with it, it is possible it was a bit too dry for a short time, if the weather was hot and it did get dry then it is perfectly normal to drop a few leaves. It is far too early for the tree to be stating to go dormant. Here where I live mine do not lose leaves until the next spring even with frosts.
Rain would not cause overwatering unless it was prononged. I am watering my trees every day even if we have had rain as it is also very warm.
I don't think you have anything to worry about just do what you are doing. I would use a tomatoe fertiliser from now on though. Tell us where you are,
Geoff.

Thanks.
I'm based in the UK Midlands. I wouldn't say it went dry in any point in past 4 months really... The rain was coming down pretty much constantly for last 3-4 days or it was on and off but if it was coming down it was really heavy and also it was seriously windy during the weekend too and the tree where it stood for now wasn't shielded from the wind at all really. I've moved it to another spot where the sun pattern is similar but it doesn't get as much wind...

"If the Chinese elm has kept its leaves for a whole season then you may start to find that the tree generates some yellow leaves which then fall off to the touch. You will see this allot in mid spring because the Chinese elm will start to shed some of its old leaves in favor of fresh buds underneath.Once the new bud starts to swell it will cause the leaf above to turn yellow and drop off a few weeks later the foliage should be replaced with fresh growth."

My tree holds the leaves until the new buds start to break before droppinh. It is odd, but does it every year.

I am aware of the fact that it can do that and indeed some of the leaves have turned yellow and dropped off but I think at the moment the leaves are dropping down are still dark green. Plus it would be normal both in March or October (pushing new leaves or dormancy leaves drop) but in the middle of August? I don't know.
I'll keep an eye on it and let you guys know if there are any developments of this situation.

Well, it has been very hot recently, and it would be very easy to get a bit too dry without you realising. I think that may be what has happened, but you have watered just in time. The tree has responded by dropping a few leaves, but then has water so stops. Mine has done just that too. It looks fine to me and I think it will be fine. You don't give much of a clue as to where you are, but there could be a club near you and also a nursery. There is a good one close to Nottingham, Greenwood 名媛直播, they are super.
Check out your local clubs, you will find everyone will be happy to help you and you should also find thye have material for sale.
Have a look at bonsai4me.com and look at Harry's books they are excellent,
Geoff.
