Hello,
My husband was given a bonsai as a present but unfortunately he does not have green fingers!
I'd like to try and save it but need a litte help identifying it.
Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

It looks like a Chinese Elm. Depending on what country you are in it should not have lost leaves at this time of year. Has it got very dry any time? That may well be the cause. Also if you have had it inside it will not help. They are a hardy species and do best outside.
You may be lucky and it will recover. Keep it watered and in a shady spot out of full sun and hope. If you can spray the top every day or leave it in rain, this may help to revive it.
Sorry I can't be more positive, don't give up yet.

Thanks for all your help Geoff.
I live in the north of Italy and we had NO idea this was an outdoor bonsai.
I've watered it and put it outside, will keep fingers crossed.
If I prune it back a bit will that help at all?
Ciao, Liz

All plants prefer to be outdoors. Indoor bonsai are a commercial invention. Some species need protection from the climate though, which is why some are placed indoors at some time of the year.

The plant will self-prune. Just let it recover, and then remove branches that are dead.

You see, I think you can keep them in a drafty windowsill, as long as it is humid. I have kept mine in such an environment for 1 year and it has thrived.

thank you all

a final question:
I'm leaving for almost 10 days and can't take the bonsai with me.
It is very dry in Milan, no chance of rain.
Does the bonsai have to be watered every couple of days?

ciao,
Lzi

If you don't water it for 10 days, you can be sure the last bit of life that is still in tree this will be gone when you come back.

What I do is leave it in a container of water up to one quarter of the pot. Not the best, but it worked for me on about 14 days. See what other people have on offer though.

I?d say that you are then not growing bonsai+ Leaving a plant for several days with the roottips underwater will cause massive problems..

I put my plants under a sprinkler, and test run for a few days. My normal plants get watered by my neighbours, who check every few days on mail etc. I ask them to check my plants get watered properly, and pray.

I see what you say, but I only do it for long holidays, I install a system that puts water in the container when the soil is dry. If there is no other hope, then I use this method. My trees survive it, they may not like it but they survive on it, so when I get back, I can give them real care.
