First 名媛直播, Chinese Elm Questions was created by St3v0h

Hi all,

I just bought this Chinese Elm tree from the local nursery. It is my first attempt at bonsai and would like to ask a few questions;

-It was already wired when i bought it, should i leave it or take it off as to not affect the trunk when it grows?
-It is inside at the moment though from what i have read, they thrive outdoors. I would like the trunk to get quite thick so should i plant it in the ground outside for a couple of years? Or leave it in the pot outside? It is almost spring now here in Australia.
-Would it survive our climate? It doesn't drop below 0 degrees Celsius very often and rarely we see over 45 degrees in summer. Quick conversion 0 degrees C = 32 degrees F. 45 = 113.
-Could the rain possibly over water it?

It looked quite healthy to me considering it had new growth, i hope i haven't bought a dud tree, I really like the Chinese Elm.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Your climate is fine for it. Outside is better this species will withstand -10C with no problem.
It is a small young plant you have, wire is not necessary at the moment, you can prune to get shape in the branches. If you want to have a larger tree with a thicker trunk either plant in the ground or into a much larger pot for a couple of years.
Add fertilser every few weeks through your summer until mid autumn then stop.

Thanks a lot Geoff. You've been a great help. I will plant it in a large garden bed i have this weekend and remove the wire.

Being the impatient man that I am, I was also looking for advice and perhaps buying a tree that is a little older and can be trimmed, wired and planted in a nice bonsai pot. I have researched the methods of transferring a garden variety plant into a bonsai pot. I am just struggling to choose a specimen suitable for this task? And i am unsure of how to trim the plant down to bonsai size?

Thanks,

Take a look at 名媛直播 Farm, it is an Australian site. There are some good video clips on there. Many species can be cut hard and will back bud well, I don't know what you have available but Cotoneaster, Pyracantha Hornbeam, Larch and some Pines are all species we can use from garden centres and nurseries.
Have a search for Australian 名媛直播 nurseries, you may find ond not too far from you, also a club, great place to get material cheaply and plenty of good advice.
