Hi! I was given a bonsai around January by a friend who came back from vacation to find out that whoever was supposed to take care of it, didn't. A few weeks after carefully caring for it, I finally took it to a florist who claimed it to be dead. To prove it, he cut the branches off to show me that the trunk was entirely dry. I have been taking care of ever since regardless and around May, grass began to grow in the pot. Soon after, I saw a stem grow near the trunk (and it did not look grassy to me). I continued to care for it and it has now grown into a very long stem with leaves every few cm on it. Looking through this site, I believe I have a Fuchsia bonsai but everyone that has seen it, does not think I have a bonsai at all. Can someone inform me whether I'm growing a tree or some random plant?
I'm attaching a picture of it.
Thank you so much in advance for any information!

it is not the species, but the shape abd growth that determine wheter something is a bonsai. This is not a bonsai, this is a green stem with leaves.
Which species? no clue.

i would say it is some kind of plum or cherry, or apple as it has shoots from the bottom.

Thank you. My friend just informed me that the original tree was supposed to be a bonsai whose fruits can be used to make medicinal Chinese herbs... Do you know what kind of bonsai it could had been?

As you already wrote yourself, this does not look like a tamarind.

it can't be a tamarind, but it was the only one i could find that is used in medicine. but i have another suggestion, what about mulberry, it is used in medicine, but again it does not look to similar but does look a bit like the picture.

Indeed it does not look similar. It's not mulberry.

just about any plant that occurs in china is used in chinese medicine. That is not a route to come to the species. The foliage, bark and eventually flowers and fruit will tell what it is..
