My brother recently dropped off his bonsai tree for me to take care of while he is on vacation. When he brought it, one side of it was completely brown (and still is.) Does anyone know what species of plant this is? Also, how can I help it survive?

The side I think is dying:

No idea what plant it is. It is not a bonsai, that is for sure.
Put the plant out of the sun, on a bright spot outside. make sure it is not in direct wind. Keep soil somewhat moist.
The plant is not dying. Most likely the brow side was against a wall and did not get enough light.

Looks like a Ficus? Not sure, but just a houseplant.

I would not say it is a ficus but I would say it is an olive of some sort.

Not Olive, could be Serrissa.

fair point, it is not an olive, but could it be a rhododendron (dwarf) and it could just have been kept outside before or in a drafty windowsill. could be wrong.

no, i would not say it would be a serissa due to the bark, it looks a lot smoother than serissa bark.
