Urgent Resque Mission
A neigbour threw out a benjamin bonsai saying it had gone pestered by microscopic ants. She said she had treated the soil and tree with some chemicals recommended for that purpose. Now the little fellow looks devastating but I can see there is still life in it as shoots with green leaves are sprouting out from the roots. Here's the photo of the miserable and I hope you can help me save it.
And I don't know how to upload the photo here Another edit I uploaded the photo. As you can see the canopy is all gone, however, there are 3 offsprings from below. The green leaves in the background don't belong to the bonsai tree.

I would wash off all the old soil and repot, then wait a month or two to re-establish before doing any more

Looks dead to me and it was probably the chemicals that killed it. The ants did not

Hi, Dave, excuse my ignorance, but when I wash off all the old soil, what will the tree feed on during this month? Perhaps it is not such a long period? Well, I'll do it today and will hope for the best.

The tree makes it's own food by photosynthesis. Fertiliser (not food) is added after about 4 weeks once the roots start to grow again.

The branch tips are not green and it looks like they are dead. There are new green offshoots that come out from the middle of the tree and from very low on the trunk. I have washed away all the soil and was greatly surprized to find out that the tree was in fact embedded into sand and there was only a thin layer of about an inch of soil or whatever on top of the sand. Now I keep it without soil and sand and only spray it with water every two days. The green leaves stay green and look alive.
I think it'll be a miracle if this tree came back to life, however, I am not giving up
