Hi, I purchased my bonsai about a week ago but cannot seem to identify it! Is anyone able to tell me what species it is? After using the ID help on here I am guessing maybe a Chinese elm or a crab apple...
Also when I took the pot out from the plastic it is sitting in there was a strange gel like substance under the pot. Is anyone able to guess what this is?
Thanks for any help!

It is nothing like a Crab. I would say Chinese Elm. Wash the stuff away. The country you are in helps, as the tree should not be inside. It looks as if it losing leaves, which if it is in then it should not be, how are you watering? You should be checking every day and watering when almost dry

Okay.
Yes I did wash the stuff away, and will continue checking to make sure it doesn't return.
Unfortunately I don't have a choice, it has to be inside! I live in an apartment complex and have no access to an outdoor pot or ground...
It is losing some leaves but also there are many new buds that have been forming every day and they are growing really rapidly!
I'm watering every day (making sure the soil stays moist).
Thank you for your reply!

Suggest you keep the tree as close to a window as possible - it really needs lots of natural light to survive and daylight intensity falls rapidly even a short distance away from a window. Don't overwater, keep the soil moist as you say, a humidity tray filled with damp gravel is often beneficial too

Only water if it is needed. Watering every day regardless is not a good idea. The humidity tray must ot allow water to syphon into the pot, so keep it off the gravel
