Hi everyone
First time posting anything.
I have a Salix cinerea (goat/grey Willow) in my yard and I am just wondering if
it can be turned into bonsai. I've had a look at most of the sites and trough a few books but
can't find anything on the style or even if it is possible or worth using as bonsai.
The trunk is 4.5 inches and has good taper.
If anyone has used one of these before any advise would be brilliant
Thank you

I only know of one person who has used a Willow. It is a nice tree, but I do know he had a lot of difficulty with it. I believe that watering was the main problem, as they are thirsty. It is a species for an experienced grower, you could try but I have only 15 years growing and I would not attempt it unless I did not mind if I lost it.

I have never heard of a goat willow ,but upon doing an image search I discovered I have one in my backyard. I have always known it as a "giant" pussy willow because the flowers are huge compared to a normal pussy willow. anyways willows are known for their ease of rooting and through expieraments I have gotten the leaves to reduce by half. airlayering works great but if it is manageable to dig it up even better.the soil when potted should retain more moisture than normal bonsai soil due to the high water demands of willows. they are almost indestructible I have had a missed log root and grow after part of the tree fell in a storm. wait till spring to do any work and it may be better to do some training in the ground for a year it will heal faster that way.best of luck and keep us posted
