Hello all,

This is my first ever tree i thought this would be a bonsai but i have been told otherwise.
it doesn't realy look like one either so my question is can this be repaired and can it be made look more like a bonsai in the future?
If so what should i do?
Repot to a bigger pot and leave it for a year to grow and then shape it and ^prune it and make it look like a bonsai?
or is this hopeless and just a waste of time?

what do you guys think?

Where do you live? Where are you keeping it? how do you water it? All these questions are relevent to how you will treat it in the coming months. I am pleased that you can see this is not a good bonsai, it is typical of those plants sold as bonsai but are poor specimens.
As long as the water is draining through the pot re potting is not needed now. Learn how to water, making sure that the soil is soaked through, then allow to almost dry out before watering again. Don't water to a schedule, just when needed.
If it is outside, good, in sun is best. If you must keep it inside, it needs the most sunlight you can give. In time it can make a good bonsai, but it will take some time. Some of the smaller growths on the trunk can be removed, and the longer shoots trimmed back. I would then re pot next spring.

It is a great starter tree. If you make a mistake it will not be a huge loss, and you can learn all about it. My first tree was when I was a kid, and It died of neglect in a windowsill. My second tree was about ten years ago, and was just a generic tropical home depot tree, but it taught me all the basics. It was a hardy tree that took all my abuse, under watering, over watering, learning how to fertilize and training. My collection and knowledge has grown extensively since then, but it all started with that first tree. I read everything I can, and watch a lot of videos posted on the internet. Graham Potter has some great videos on You Tube.

I second Graham Potter. He has a great way of explaining his methods and makes it interesting.

just so yopu know this is a airlayered branch this is why there is very little taper in the trunk, with this said yes your tree needs a lot of time and attention to become a nice bonsai.
at the moment growing the tree taller will not do much for the issues your tree has.that first branch needs to grow a lot. this will eventually be cut off in 3 to 5 years but until then it will be used to thicken the trunk below this point.this technique can be used with other branches that sprout to adjust the thickness of the trunk.this may take 20 years but that is the nature of bonsai.for now learn the basics of keeping it alive.a problem with elms I have noticed people have is not giving them enough light. elms like a lot of sun

Well in the meanwhile the tree is repotted to a bigger pot.
It will stay in that pot for 1-2 years.
I live in Belgium and right now its rain season the tree is outside, it gets allot of light and allot of rain at the moment.

So the bottom branch needs to stay on the tree if i understand correctly so the trunk can thicken right?
I will try to keep it alive untill next spring and see how it has grown or evolved.
and come back here to show it.

yes the branch should stay. this is known as a sacrifice branch let it grow uncontrolled and as it thickens so will the trunk below it.good idea with the larger pot the best thing is to let lower branches grow and prune the top this will eventually put some taper in the trunk
