manofthetrees, if like you say "now there is probubly more roots than soil in the pot" then root rot will be visible as soon as the root ball is pulled out. So it's not contradicting in any way. Root rot spreads very aggressively and can lead to pythium Once pythium sets in, it's all over and nothing can stop it. I would not wait to transplant it and check the root ball.

Ok I have ordered soil for it so will let you know when it arrives (Friday hopefully)
This tree has always been inside. The leaves grow fairly large and then turn brown within a few days and fall off...... but as you can see in the picture there are a few brown/green leaves on it now - this is how it is....... it only gets a few leaves then they fall off.
On examining it tonight I can see very tiny little green shoots coming from some of the branches.
Thanks for the help

can you perhaps send me a picture of what the roots should look like so when I take this poor tree out the soil I know what I am doing as I am totally honest here - I have no idea.
thanks

A healthy root system should look much like this. Every tree has a slightly different color, but should ideally be a light silver or white. Root rot will be black or very dark all over the entire root system. If you want, take a picture of it once you take it out, and post it. You will be able to tell immediately, also root rot smells bad, like decomposing matter.

I don't think I would bother re potting, it looks dead to me. If you are near Herons 名媛直播 take it to Peter and see what he thinks. Chinese Elms are not indoor trees. Just because they are sold as indoor does not mean it is correct. It is the dealers marketing ploy to sell more trees. They are a tough species, but they do not do well indoors. To keep it alive for any length of time is not easy. Don't buy soils on line, it will be very expensive to get delivered, if you must try to re pot, then get a bag of Akadama and do a full re pot, remove the dead roots, there will be a lot and put into pure Akadama. You may be lucky and it survives, you may not.

hello....... I took it out and the roots were very tangled so I sorted them out a bit and trimmed them down and repotted.
It doesn't look too good but I do see tiny - very tiny - little green shoots starting on one or two branches so hopefully it will recover.
thanks for your help - if it recovers well I shall post a picture of it in happiness lol

What color were the roots, did you see any rot? Are you giving it any food?
