What kind of pine is this? was created by michaelj

I saved this pine from a neighbor's landscape redo. I think it might be a red pine, and it's too tall, with no good taper until half way up the tree, but I like it and plan to keep it. Can anyone help me confirm whether it's a red pine?

I cant say what kind it is, but it is a beautiful tree. With a couple years of proper care and training it could be very nice. What kind of soil is in that pot?

Most of what's in there is the original root ball. Surrounding it in the larger tub is a mix of diatomite and turface.

That's what I'm thinking it might be, but I'm not as certain as I'd like to be.

I'm in California. I don't think it's ponderosa, but I'll look at that possibility more carefully tonight when I get home.
