What kind of shape should it be? Plz Help! was created by jinkim

Hello!

I would love to shape and wire my Ficus Retusa, and I need advice! I feel clueless as to what kind of shape this plant should take on. There are 3 main branches, and everything is just so straight and lifeless. I repotted it about 2 weeks ago and am waiting for it to recover from it.

I am thinking of putting a rock under the roots next winter or should I not?
Should I be cutting off any branches?
Should it be a leaning shape or something else?

A rock added to it would look great!

My advice would be to let the tree grow (keep it well fertilized) and try to reduce leaf size, as well as to get new branching closer to the trunk. Good luck!

it is still pretty early to decide what shape this should be as it really has very few branches and not much foliage. I agree with Oscar, let it grow as much as you can and try to get more branches, especially near the trunk.

If you plan to use any of this branches in the future, you can wire them to get them into shape before too hard, and shorten them, so they dont thicken too much compared to the trunk. You will get some back budding too.
Wire and bend the leader too if you are not going to grow it some more to thicken the trunk. I would have thickened the trunk some more...but maybe you want a very small bonsai?
Maybe bend the lower left and right branches horizontal and go for sort of banian informal upright.
Do You want something like a virt?

I would read some books on bonsai and see what styles catch your eye and which styles fit what characteristics are already showing in your tree. This will help you decide the course of action to take for your tree. The internet also has some great information for forming bonsai and how it is accomplished, and the timing of each step. The trunk formation from what I have studied, is the first thing to do once you have decided on a style. The branch formation follows this step. Hope this helps.
