Hi
Ive brought a big piece of dead wood off Ebay and when it came the bottom is soaked in creosote would this be harmful if potted with a live tree ?

I would like to give you a clear answer but it's a bit complicated. My answer would be: "It depends".
Creosote is definitly toxic to humans. However, plants appear to have a variety of tolerance levels to it.
My advice would be to attempt removal of the Creasote. I found one article which may help:
Another option is to seal the wood; thus, eliminating leaching when you water.
