Well awhile ago....I was soo excited to start bonsai...I read 2 articles and thought I knew it all >.< I realize now I was extremely wrong!!
But that being said, I had found this 4 year old sappling that I thought had a beautiful trunk and wished to turn into a bonsai. the article had said that you should cut down the trunk to your desired height and that at it would sprout branches and you would work from there etc.
The trouble started where I wasn't certain what to use to cut it down to size....so I grabed a one handed saw...Im not exactly certain what kind of saw it was....It had about a cm wide blade >.< and I sawed it down to my desired height...But when I neared the end of cutting through it, the blade wouldnt cut straight across because the last strip was pliable, and so I tried to twist and cut....and I ended up tearing down a long strip along the trunk!! :S
Anyway my agenda in telling you all this is....Is there anything I can do to save it! I really like the trunk still....and I feel so sorry I did this!!
I have taken some photographs to help illustrate its condition.
I can add more photos if it is necessary I wish to do all I can to save it!!

seeing there is growth below the stripped spot you can cut back to there.you need pruning shears at best. if you only have a saw cut half way through and then cut from the other side ... i can see why you picked this one it does have a nice base going there

This is not as bad as it looks. If you leave the plant to grow out again you should get a decent healing on the bark, and the bark will close over the damaged area.
The trunk-chop method will need to be carried out a number of time on a plant to reach taper anyway. Also see
And as man of trees said: Next time, cut the bark on one side, then cut the other side.

I do trunk chops on trees that are too big to use shears like this:
Use a utility knife and cut as deep as I can through the bark where I want the cut.
Then use my saw a bit above that cut.
After that I use a knob cutter or the utility knife to whittle away the stub down to the knife cut.
Doing it this way I achive a nice clean edge and a not so flat saw cut.
