Hi, Im in need of a little guidance and am hoping this site can help me.
I was recently in my local homebase when i spotted a bonsai that looked like it needed some TLC. As the tree was down to ?20 from ?50 i decided to take the gamble and hope that i could revive it. I have a few questions that im hoping someone out there maybe able to answer for me. First question is can anybody identify what type of tree this is and possibly its age. Now the label said it was an indoor tree so im keeping it by a large bay window but out of direct sunlight. Secondly can anybody possibly tell me why, when i first bought the tree (a week ago) why 80% of the leaces where brown? i followed some guide lines and pulled them off and cut any old dead branches off. Another thing im concerned about some off the newer shoots turn black before they have a chance to get any bigger and turn into leaves. Im really hoping this is something very simple like underwatering due to lack of care in the shop. Thankyou very much for your time.

It is a very sick looking ficus. Unfortunatly you will have to keep it in frost free conditions. If it survives then you will be lucky.
Keep it watered by allowing it to dry out between waterin, do not add any fertiliser as this will not be of any use to a plant in this state. The leaves turning brown is possibly from the shop being cold or it was in a cold draught, they do not like it. If that tree was priced at ?50 then I think I would not be going into a garden centre with that sort of pricing, and incompetance in plant care.
Geoff.

Thankyou Geoff! Do you think repotting would help or could this possibly worsen the situation?

the condition is most likely caused from a lack of light ficus need alot of it
by the look of the long internodes and large leave the tree was growing healthy not too long ago.,but these sin=gns point to the low light levels. it may have also been left to dry out too long, they will drop leaves to reduce water loss, and it is just staring to come back.
the soil looks like mud so repotting would be a good idea. leave as many roots intact that you can and check if there are any dead ones and remove these.
ficus are very tough they just need alot of light.

Well when i firsy got the plant it had alot of leaves but most of them where brown and just blew off so id guessed it had recently been a healthy tree. Iv moved the plant into the main bay window in my house as it is the place that gets most light. This will mean that the plant will get a few hours of direct sunlight. Do you think this could be a problem. Also if the room drops to below 15 in the night ill take it a warmer room. Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Temperature is fine, It could be just the move, as long as the soil is draining ok then it should be fine,

under the conditions you discribed you need some supplamental lighting.this can be as simple as a clip on desk lamp with a 40 watt equivalent cfl bulb hung over the tree as close as possible. my ficus are on a 16 hour light schedual while indoors and are put in full sun all day when the weather permitsthem outside. a few hours of direct sunlight will not be enough you will end up with long skinny branches and huge leaves
