I bought this dying bonsai today and can't figure out what type it is and how to help jt. Branches and leaves are very brittle and dry. Have ordered send bonsai food. Amy help much appreciated! Thx

Please post a pic of the actual plant. This image is so compressed, it is hard to even recognize where one leave starts and the other ends.

NEVER add fertiliser to a plant that is doing poorly unless you know really well what you are doing.

As it comes from one of the big megastore kinda-shops, I would go out on a limb and say it might very well be a sageretia theezans ( ), but a chinese elm would also be a very good option (Ulmus parvifolia)

Hi thanks for your reply. I have attached another picture. I have been researching and think it might be a Zanthoxylum?? Still not sure. The ones you suggested above seem to have pointy type leaves where my bonsai have more rounded leaves (albeit they are withering : ( )

the dark bark is pointing me towards bird plum but i am not positive.
why in the world would you buy a dieing tree???
it is still green so it may just need a good watering and a sunny place to recover. you may loose most of the branches but if it is still alive its still alive. no food and no repotting it is stressed and any more shock will surely kill it. let the soil dry out a bit before watering again less leaves will require less water

Did they pay you to take it away? It may well survive, but it will take a long time to recover.
